PIERMARQ* is pleased to present First Light, an exhibition showcasing the work of three of Australia’s most acclaimed Indigenous artists: Warlimpirrnga Tjapaltjarri, George Hairbrush Tjungurrayi and Tommy Watson. The exhibition will be on view from 12 February to 7 March 2025, with an opening reception on Wednesday, 12 February from 6–8 PM.
First Light draws its title from the sunrise that illuminates the vast back country, symbolizing both the dawn of a new day and the first spark of creation. The exhibition explores ideas of beginnings: the emergence of light, land, and story, and the continuing renewal of artistic expression across generations. Together, Tjapaltjarri, Tjungurrayi and Watson, bring into focus a shared vision of illumination, of the first light that touches the desert, and of the creative spark that continues to guide their communities and artistic journeys.
Through vivid fields of color and intricate mark-making, the artists translate ancestral narratives and connections to Country into dynamic contemporary expressions. Each work resonates with the enduring power of Indigenous knowledge systems and the artists’ deep relationship to the land.
