Cosimo Casoni: Strade di Casa (Ways to Home)

8 May - 7 June 2025

PIERMARQ* is pleased to present Strade di Casa (Ways to Home) by Italian artist, Cosimo Casoni. This is Casoni’s third exhibition at PIERMARQ* in Sydney.

Strade di Casa (Ways to Home) is a body of work that Casoni began conceptualising in 2016. Long connected to the landscape and surrounding architecture between Florence and the Maremma, Casoni turns his gaze to rural scenes that, though part of his everyday life, often escape conscious notice. These fragments of ordinary landscapes are first captured in photographs during his travels, then reimagined through painting, using a visual language reminiscent of the Macchiaioli — the movement that marked Tuscan painting between the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Using a refined yet playful style, the artist draws us into his immersive vision of the landscape, where action painting techniques—spray paint, finger marks, even his skateboard—serve as co-creators of a more authentic, layered interpretation.

The unifying theme across these diverse works is the idea of home—as both a physical and mental refuge. Its form becomes a vehicle for stylistic experimentation, expressed through blotches, geometric stylization, or a single spray-painted gesture. For Casoni, the home is both a space for painterly exploration and a boundary to break free from: rooftops become ramps, and walls transform into landscapes for the eye to wander.

As an exhibition, the works create a “mental village”: a constellation of houses on the edge of abstraction, suspended in a precarious balance. Strade di Casa invites the viewer into a world where geometry serves as a framework for bold experimentation and where every brushstroke, every mark, tells a story of ongoing exploration of the tension between structure and freedom.

Cosimo Casoni’s (b. 1990) work has been exhibited internationally and is celebrated for its conceptual depth and innovative use of materials. He lives and works between Maremma and Milan, Italy.
