There were no up, there were no down, is an exhibition featuring the work of Danish artist, Thorbjørn Bechmann and German artist, Yvonne Robert.
The exhibition invites a dialogue between two abstract practices that challenge orientation and perception. Taking its title from a rejection of fixed positions and singular interpretations, there were no up, there were no down, explores abstraction as both structure and surrender. Bechmann and Robert bring a distinct visual language to the exhibition - Bechmann’s luminous, gestural layers juxtapose Robert’s energetic and intuitive mark-making. Together, their works suggest a realm where direction dissolves, and the experience of viewing becomes immersive and destabilising.
Thorbjørn Bechmann’s work is defined by translucent veils and complex fields of colour, built through technique and spontaneity. His work draws viewers into a meditative space where movement and light take form. Yvonne Robert also embraces the spontaneity of color and gesture, creating paintings that feel raw and alive. Her brushstrokes are bold and immediate, grounded in the physicality of the painting process, often blurring the line between control and chaos.
In conversation, the two practices embody the exhibition’s central ethos: that abstraction is not a void, but a visceral, ever-changing terrain.
