PIERMARQ* is pleased to present Dozo!, an exhibition of new work by Australian artist, Adam Lester. Dozo! will include paintings of oil on canvas, inspired by the artists immersive travels across Japan. The exhibition opens on Thursday 31 July, from 6-8pm and will be on view until 23 August 2025.
Dozo! — a Japanese word with a variety of meanings expressing invitation, permission, or a polite offer — invites audiences to explore a vibrant dialogue between culture and memory. Lester’s practice engages with themes of travel and culture, as a visual diary capturing fleeting, nostalgic moments. The intimate snapshots evoke a sense of place and time with a subtle interplay between tradition and modernity. Lester highlights the small, often overlooked details; street signs, quiet bar scenes and fleeting interactions that carry rich cultural meaning and capture a sense of memory and longing.
Investigating the relationships between people, places and objects, Lester’s work combines elements of anachronism and humor to create dynamic visual assemblages with an escapist sentimentalism to bygone eras. Lester’s work has been exhibited broadly in Australia and is included in prominent public & private collections internationally. Adam Lester lives and works in Brisbane, Australia.
