David Griggs Australian, b. 1975

Australian artist, David Griggs works across painting, video and installation.  Ten times Archibald Prize finalist, Griggs creates vibrant, energetic paintings that exhume the raw undercurrents of a society and the human condition.  Griggs is known for his bold anarchistic approach, drawing on personal experience, political imagery, popular culture and local crime histories often revealing the social hierarchies and underground cultures.

Griggs has exhibited extensively across Australia and abroad, with major institutional presentations at the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, Heide Museum of Modern Art, the Art Gallery of New South Wales, and the Palais de Tokyo in Paris. His acclaimed touring survey exhibition Between Nature and Sin (2017–2019) showcased the visceral energy and socio-political depth of his practice, opening at Campbelltown Arts Centre before touring widely across regional Australia. Participating venues included Glasshouse Regional Gallery, Northern Centre for Contemporary Art, Redland Art Gallery, Cairns Regional Gallery, Lismore Regional Gallery, Griffith Regional Art Gallery, Maitland Regional Art Gallery, Orange Regional Gallery, and Burrinja Cultural Centre.

Griggs’ work is held in numerous major public collections. These include the Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA), the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia (MCA), the University of Queensland Art Museum, the Powerhouse Museum, Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre, Tamworth Regional Gallery, Newcastle Art Gallery, the University of Melbourne Art Collection, and Monash University Museum of Art (MUMA). His work also entered the collection of Mosman Art Gallery following his receipt of the 2023 Mosman Art Prize.
