Ben Crase American, b. 1976

Born in Butte, Montana, Ben Crase now lives and works in San Diego, California. Crase's figurative works depict characters and scenes reminiscent of the American west in the 19th century. Acknowledging a complex and violent past, the paintings are imbued with a sense of optimism.  Those who wear signature pink hats symbolise the ‘good guys’ of the era, demonstrating compassion and learnings from destructive histories.

Working primariy with oil and oil stick, Crase masters the language of colour by layering his materials to create rich expressive hues. Texture and skewed compositional elements evoke an emotional response from the viewer – one that may feel vaguely familiar while firmly rooted in the past.

Crase is an early career, self taught painter who is establishing an industry network through international exhibition of his work.
