Mathew Tom is a New York-based multi-disciplinary artist. Tom draws inspiration from his joint heritage, combining Eastern and Western imagery to create new interpretations, meanings and experiences. His practice is underscored by a fascination with what he calls 'universal images'. "I often wonder if paintings have some form of power. Certain images seem to have a particular charm and are able to attract an audience regardless of the time period or location." Tom's saturated oil paintings harbour a myriad symbols with seamless elegance, resulting in an atmosphere where motifs and visual stimuli transcend their historical and geographical origin, to be recognised and experienced in an entirely new context. These dream-like compositions become an outlet to express and mediate Tom's own complex individual identity, in belonging to two disparate cultures.
